OSV Chemical Code introduces stricter controls for
cargo tank ventilation safety

The OSV Chemical Code has been developed in line with the provisions of Regulation 11.2 of Annex II to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), 1973, as amended by the 1978 Protocol. It acknowledges the need for dedicated standards that offer an alternative to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk (IBC Code).

More specifically, the OSV Chemical Code addresses changes in the carriage of both low flashpoint liquids and contaminated bulk liquids. Several liquid cargoes have been reclassified under the International Bulk Chemical (IBC) Code and are now recognized as posing both safety and pollution hazards. Previously, under Resolution A.673, certain requirements could be waived for tanks carrying substances identified as “pollution-only” products. However, with updated hazard assessments, some of these substances no longer fall under that category.

Notably, methanol has been reclassified as toxic, which has significant implications for vessel design, handling procedures, and compliance with safety protocols.

To clarify the OSV Chemical Code considerations for cargo tank ventilation onboard offshore support vessels, Ventiq has published a document outlining the associated possibilities and restrictions.
